Queens Golden Gaels Coach Helps Kick Off Fundraising for Fellowes High School Football
The head coach of the national champion Queens Golden Gaels Football team will bring the Vanier Cup with him when he participates in a kick off event for the fundraising efforts to bring high school football back to the City of Pembroke. Pat Sheahan will be the guest speaker at an event for football alumni and supporters of the new Fellowes football program on Tuesday, February 2nd at 7 p.m. at Fellowes High School.
Sheahan has spent most of life on a football field and capped his extraordinary university football coaching career when his Queens team won a Canadian university football championship in November by defeating the Calgary Dinosaurs in the Vanier Cup title game. He began his coaching career in 1979 and last year was named the CIS football head coach of the year. He has been the head coach at Queens for the past decade, where he has helped the club restore its image as one of the top football programs in the country.
Fellowes Football Fundraising Co-Chair, Harley McDowell, says this is a wonderful opportunity for the community to show its support of the Fellowes football program. “It is our hope that many alumni of the Fellowes and former Champlain High School football programs will attend this rare opportunity to hear from one of Canada’s top university football coaches. The event is free and is open to anyone who enjoys the sport of football and is interested in the effort to bring football back to the City of Pembroke,” adds McDowell.
Sheahan will be accompanied by Sean Conway, the Honorary Chair of the Fellowes Fundraising committee. Conway is currently the Acting Vice-Principal of Advancement at Queens University and is an avid football fan. During their visit to Fellowes High School, Sheahan and Conway will spend time with students at the school who are interested in playing football, before participating in the speaking engagement with football alumni and supporters.
Since announcing the return of a football program to Fellowes in December, several businesses, organizations and individuals have supported the school’s efforts to raise money to cover the cost of equipment for players , as well as practice equipment, footballs and other materials needed to support a football team. The goal is to raise more than $30,000 to ensure the long term sustainability of the sport.
It has been more than fifteen years since the City of Pembroke has had a high school football team. Other schools in Renfrew County who play in the Lanark-Renfrew High School Football League include MacKenzie High in Deep River, Renfrew Collegiate Institute and Arnprior and District High School.
