About TVCOGECO
TVCOGECO provides a dedicated channel, trained staff, and sophisticated digital production resources for the creation of non-commercial local programming that reflects the needs, concerns, events, and celebrations of our diverse community. We inform our viewers of our similarities and differences, the issues and common concerns, the unique activities, rich diversity, and resources that contribute to the evolving character of our City.
Key to local focus and relevance is the partnership with local citizens, organizations, and institutions, through which programs are produced by, and for, this community. Training in television productions is also offered at no cost to local residents, many of whom have subsequently found careers in the field. Many students earn credits through the Co-op program which has flourished for close to 25 years.
Programming ranges from politics to sports and from event coverage to information about local resources, (eg. City Council, Round table discussions, election coverage, festivals and carnivals, sporting events, health, education, and social issues). People are watching and responding. Our annual overall cable service surveys consistently reveal that 62% of the respondents feel that the community channel is an important service--an outstanding response for any channel.
This wide-reaching and effective means of communicating with city residents is NOT a licensing requirement, but is provided by TVCOGECO as a unique cable service to the communities it serves. The CRTC, the regulatory body overseeing the licensing of Canadian communications companies, leaves it up to cable companies to decide if they want to invest in this form of local contribution, or simplify their operations by adding to their present contributions to the Canadian Television Production Fund. TVCOGECO chooses to invest in our community channels as one of the key means by which we can contribute to and play a greater role in our community.
TVCOGECO's production facilities are located in downtown Belleville, and serve Belleville, Brighton, Colborne, Quinte West, Stirling, Wellington, Bloomfield, Napanee and the surrounding Quinte Region.
TVCOGECO works with Loyalist College students in the Television and New Media Production program.
