Hometown Heroes: Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital nurses!

Sue Partridge got started a bit later than some as a nurse. After 15 years as a small business owner, then emigrating to Canada, she enrolled in high school as a mature student, then graduated from Mohawk's RN Program.

Sue has been at Joseph Brant for 17 years. She spent seven years in the special care nursery, obstetrics and paediatrics, as well as other units. Sue also took the opportuity to receive wound care training.

Her commitment and expertise were apparent. "Sue enhances quality of life for patients affected by wounds that can alter their ability to lead a normal life," says Julie Dawson, Manager - Complex Continuing Care, "She works with nurses and physicians, sharing her knowledge, mentoring abilities and providing hands-on support. Sue is relentless in her quest for excellence in patient care." That's what makes Sue Partridge one of Joseph Brant's Best People!

The first thing people notice about Bob Choina is his smile, but he explains it is as much a choice as it is his nature. "I had a great medical teacher in Poland who taught me that when you come to work, you leave your problems at the door. They can't become your patients' problems. That's not fair to them."

Bob works in the Emergency Department and loves it. "He has the ability to put someone at ease immediately with his wonderful smile. He can convey in an instant that he is there to listen and provide confidence to that patient," says his manager in the ER. His patients agree, "He was so very kind. He had a great sense of humor, which really helped me feel at ease. He took time and had a great attitude."

"It's important to listen and be responsive," Bob says. "If your mind is somewhere else, the patient sees that. Bob's accountability to patients and dedication to his profession make him one of Joseph Brant's Best People
